Q. What the mechanism of hypotension with ascites patient have liver cirrhosis?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
In liver cirrhosis, the diminished function of the liver results in a build-up of toxins in the blood. These toxins can cause a decrease in the production of albumin and other proteins, which leads to a condition called hypoalbuminemia.
Hypoalbuminemia causes fluid to leak from blood vessels into tissues (edema), including the abdomen (ascites). The decrease in protein also causes blood cells to clump together (coagulation) and makes it more difficult for the heart to pump blood (hypotension).
